An Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for gathering important patient medical history and performing visual screening and diagnostic testing prior to doctor’s visit with patient. Performs all other duties required to assist in/and or ensure the delivery of complete eye care and treatment of patients. Assist and facilitate efficient patient flow while coordinating with the Providers.

Schedule: This position generally works five days per week, Monday through Friday between 8:00am and 5pm. Flexibility in schedule is occasionally needed in order to meet business goals and provide exceptional patient service.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform initial screening by taking patient history, measuring visual acuity, pupil assessment, gross external exam, basic manual lensometry (single vision, multifocal, and progressive lenses), stereo testing, color vision testing with color plates, visual field testing by confrontation, motility (EOM), angle assessment, Goldmann Applanation and Tonopen tonometry, BAT, manifest refraction etc.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology anatomy and physiology of the eye.
  • Knowledge of ocular pharmacology. Administer of topical ophthalmic medication or oral medications under the direction of the Physician, etc.
  • Perform diagnostic such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), Topography, IOL Master, Humphrey Visual Field (HVF), etc.
  • Accurate documentation in Electronic Medical Records
  • Assist with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, set up and clean up room from procedures.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Instructs the patient regarding testing procedures clearly and concisely.
  • Maintains cleanliness and keeps equipment in order within the exam rooms.
  • May assist in providing training to other Ophthalmic personnel, as assigned.
  • May function as a scribe for the Ophthalmologist.
  • May assist with laser and Ophthalmic procedures in the minor procedure room.
  • Provides cross coverage of technical assistance to all specialties and providers at Maine Eye as needed.
  • Performs all other duties required to assist in/and or ensure the delivery of complete ophthalmic care and treatment of patients.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in the ophthalmic/optometric field strongly preferred, with healthcare experience required.
  • CPR Certification or willingness to gain CPR Certification within six months of hire.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred but not required.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in the ophthalmic/optometric/medical field with patient interaction required.
  • Minimum of 6 months working as an Ophthalmic Assistant or Ophthalmic Technician required.

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

CPR Certification or willingness to gain CPR Certification within six months of hire.
